New Script - Stephen Barker
This is a revision of the script, with anything potentially offensive removed (if I've missed anything then let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments!)
Newsreader 1: Now to news of an interesting solution to the recent NHS budget cuts. North Yorkshire health services have approved a trial of using long forgotten natural remedies to cure common ailments, in order to save money on basic medicines such as painkillers and antibiotics.
Newsreader 2: One such surgery is the castle road drop in centre in Scarborough, which will see people with complaints such as tooth ache and stomach upsets being treated with sharks teeth and various other local charms.
Newsreader 1: Officials have defended the move, saying that no patients lives will be put at risk and such unconventional methods are necessary in order to keep other vital services afloat.
(as it fades out) Newsreader 2: now back to our main story, a penguin has gone on a rampage....
*********************
Patient one (scottish bloke) : hello doctor. I've been having a wee bit trouble with ma pipes if you know what I mean. When I goes to the toilet, It's... well, without going into too much detail it's like the battle of bannockburn in there!
(if given wrong treatment)
patient one: now come on doctor, I may not have ma medical licence but even I know that's wrong!
(after being given correct treatment)
Patient: oh right, I see, well thank you very much doctor. Goodbye now!
**************
Patient 2: (female twentysomething) Good morning doctor. Basically, I keep throwing up, I think something at work is making me ill.
Doctor: where is it you work exactly?
Patient 2: I'm a food tester for McDonalds.
Doctor: (monologue) sounds like a nasty case of food poisoning. Luckily, I have just the thing.
Patient 2: (if given wrong treatment) I don't think that's going to work is it?
Patient 2: (if given correct treatment) Thanks doctor, I feel better already!
***************
Patient 3 (guy with really broad yorkshire accent, arm has clearly been cut off): Alright Doctor. I'm ashamed to say that last night I couldn't even give the wife a hand, we're painting the ceiling you see. Anyway, I should probably tell you what's wrong, not a mindreader are you! I keep bleeding everywhere for some strange reason.
Doctor: my intuition tells me this man is suffering from excess bleeding, but I'm sure I can have this guy helping his wife in no time!
Patient 3: (if given wrong treatment) Ey up, this doesn't look right to me. You get your medical licence at Tesco or summat?
Patient 3: (if given correct treatment) Cheers doc, I'm sure the wife will be well pleased tonight!
Doctor: I would also recommend you pop up to the hospital, just as a precaution.
Patient 3: No, I'm sure this will be just fine, thanks all the same doc!
***************
Patient 4: (mum with baby) Right, me daughter keeps like doing all this crying and that. I think she's teething, I can't hear the telly and it's proper doing my head in!
Doctor: (monologue) Yep, she's definitely teething. Now which charm was it again?
Patient 4 (if given wrong treatment): Errr, I don't think so. People will start calling me a bad mother if I give him that!
Patient 4 (if given correct treatment): Right so I just put this on her. Goes nicely with her jacket actually, thanks doctor!
***************
Patient 5: (parent with baby): Hiya doctor. Basically, this little guy is coughing his head off and he's getting snot everywhere!
Doctor: looks like a classic case of croup. I'll have him sorted in no time though!
Patient 5: (if given wrong treatment) That? For croup? That's crazy talk!
Patient 5: (if given correct treatment) Cool, so as long as he's got this on, his go away?
Doctor: well if it doesn't help, collect up some snails, boil them up in some milk or water, then feed that to little Ashton.
Patient 5: no chance, that sounds disgusting!
Doctor: got to be better than sprouts though eh?
Just a few images of the interfacing - Craig Hood
An early draft of the news room which is the first screen on the large display. the smaller image seen changes to accompany the audio of the news story, not final image again.
Below is the waiting room screen draft, with each patient having a u-button to trigger the quiz section for that patient. final images to come.
Below is a screen shot of the main page of interfacing which contains all of the individual patchers for differnt parts of the insallation. These parts are labelled such as 'learning screens'.
Below is the waiting room screen draft, with each patient having a u-button to trigger the quiz section for that patient. final images to come.
below is the interface for the right/wrong screens with the counter to count up the ammont of correct answers.
More to come !! :D
Update - Craig Hood
Right then, time i actually updated on the blog. so since the first presentations i have been working on the interface design for our installation and it is coming along nicely. i have done a fair bit since we started but not updated on here so i will try to catch up with this post and be more regular for the next 2 weeks. The first thing i had to contend with was the number of screens/patchers that needed to be created and making sure they all opened and closed at the correct points. After working out roughly how many scenes our installation needed i set out putting it together. It was a bit difficult to get a feel for the installation we are creating at first because i had no images/audio in the early stages. By using comment boxes i was able to keep track of which screen was for which part of the 'game'. My main aim at the early stage was to get the many windows opening and closing when required so using the comment boxes helped me to keep track of where i was at. Now we have some of the images loaded in i am finding it easier to put the rest together as it is taking shape.
The first scene in our installation is the news story which has a number of images changing over the news room image as the story is being told, it then goes straight into the doctors office where the user can choose to learn about each charm or go straight to the waiting room to play the quiz section. All of this part is completed from the interface side of things with the timings of the changing pictures and end of the news story to be finalised when the audio etc. is complete.
The next section, 'learning about the charms', posed some problems but not too difficult. There are all of the 5 charms to learn about in this section and the opening/closing of these windows needed to be programmed. I have created the interface throughout the project so that there are not too many windows open at the same time, so only the needed ones at any point are the only ones open. This sometimes made the project 'jitter' a bit so needed solving with some simple delays, so that there wasn't to many of these open/closes happening at exactly the same time. I came across the 'jitteryness' by selecting to change screens fairly quickly, which is when it started to play up, this could deffinately happen at the museum with users selecting things quickly so i tried solving this problem just in case this does happen. It works fine now, (even should be kid proof from their quick fingers) and seems to run smoothly on my maschine, needs testing on the mac mini though!!
All the quiz section is working fine with the interfacing, i have progammed it so that after 5 questions are answered correctly the final completed screen is shown with a code to collect a prize from the main desk. The user can select a patient from the waiting room where he/she needs to try and cure them with the correct charm, the patients can be slected in any order and the correct answers are still counted up, which when it reaches 5 completes the quiz. The user can also go back to the learning page and other pages with the count for the quiz staying at the same point.
With all of the screens working fine the next tasks that i have to complete are as follows:

- Add the final images when completed
- Add all of the audio when completed and get the triggering of these right, checking for bugs etc by testing it and testing it. things like selecting options on the screen need to be checked if done too fast as this could mess up the triggering but could happen with those pesky kids using the installation like a kid does. so need to look into that.
- once pictures of the patients and waiting room are complete, i need to make sure that when one patient is cured that their picture is removed from the waiting room, also disabling the u-buttons for that patient.
- Need to do something with the page containing information about Clarke so that it is a bit more engaging than just a few pictures and writing. allowing the user to scroll through the pictures of Clarke by dragging their finger on the touch screen would be nice.
- need to sort out the 'fullscreen' on all windows so that when they open the menu/title bars are not present.

Script version 1 - Stephen Barker
This is the first version of the script, I'm hoping that one of the guys from the museum can take a look at this and make sure it is OK, because I've tried to inject some humor into it and I just want to make sure that it will be fine for all ages. I should point out that I'm not claiming it to be a work of comedy genius! But I feel that if it raises a bit of chuckle, the user will be more likely to want to carry on through the rest of it. However, it is difficult to hit all ages without it being to gentle and sanitized, so I've tried to throw in a couple of things that teens and adults will like, and some things that kids would like, but without making it too obvious (nothing that would offend anyone or be too near the edge for children to be listening to!). Let me know if you feel that there is anything that isn't appropriate and therefore needs changing.

When I goes to the toilet, It's... well, without going into too much detail it's like the battle of bannockburn in there! I need something to get the flow back regular you see, a bit less like broth and a bit more like haggis if you catch ma drift.
(if given wrong treatment)
patient one: now come on doctor, I may not have ma medical licence but even I know that's wrong!
(after being given correct treatment)
Patient one: oh right, I see, So I just pop this....
Doctor: (interjecting) no, no, just wear it like a necklace.
Patient: oh right, I see, well thank you very much doctor. Goodbye now!

Patient 2: (female twentysomething) Good morning doctor. Basically, I keep throwing up, and I've had some hair fall out in the shower. I think something at work is making me ill.
Doctor: where is it you work exactly?
Patient 2: A nuclear power plant.
Doctor: hmmm, sounds like a nasty case of radiation poisoning. Very dangerous. Luckily, I have just the thing.
Patient 2: (if given wrong treatment) I don't think that's going to work is it?
Patient 2: (if given correct treatment) Thanks doctor, I feel better already!
Doctor: I would also recommend you pop up to the hospital, just as a precaution.
Patient 2 : No, I'm sure this will be sufficient, thanks all the same doc!

Patient 3 (guy with really broad yorkshire accent, arm has clearly been cut off): Alright Doctor. I'm ashamed to say that last night I couldn't even give the wife a hand in the bedroom. We're painting the ceiling you see.
Patient 3: (if given correct treatment) Right, so I wear this brooch, and I'll be ready for action? With this and me Arthritis bracelet, I'm startin' to look like flippin' Mr.T! Anyway, cheers doc, I'm sure the wife will be well pleased tonight!
***************
Patient 4: (chav mum with baby) Right, me son keeps like doing all this coughing and that. And all this stuff comes up, right messy it is. I can't hear the telly and it's proper doing my head in. So what's up with him?
Doctor: looks like a classic case of croup. Now which charm was it again?
Patient 4 (if given wrong treatment): Errr, I don't think so. People will start calling me a bad mother if I give him that!
Patient 4 (if given correct treatment): So I just put this on him and I'll be able to watch the X Factor in peace for once! Nice one doc
Doctor: if it doesn't help, what you can do is collect up some snails, boil them up in some milk or water, then feed that to little Ashton.
Patient 4: that sounds proper rank!
Doctor: got to be better than pot noodles again though eh?
***************
Patient 5: (youngish lad with baby): Hiya doctor. So anyway, my mum reckons this little guy is teething and He needs something to keep him happy!
Doctor: Well that's no problem, we'll soon have your brother back as good as new!
Patient 5: My brother? What do you mean? He's my son!
Doctor: ah, I forgot where I was for a minute there! Yes of course. Right, so, teething was it? I'm sure I've got something for that, now what was it again?
Patient 5: (if given wrong treatment) That? For teething? That's crazy talk!
Patient 5: (if given correct treatment) Cool, so as long as he's got this on, his teeth will come through ok? That's great!
Doctor: exactly. (in a child like voice) Now, would you like a lolly for being a good boy?
Patient 5: I think he's a bit young for that!
Doctor: I was talking to you.
